The Premier League's Qatar World Cup plan that could affect Newcastle and their international stars

Premier League chiefs are planning to bring forward the start date of the 2022-23 season one week due to the Qatar World Cup.

The top flight season could also finish a week later meaning the season will be prolonged by two weeks.

The 2022 World Cup is being hosted in the winter, as opposed to the summer, as FIFA organisers looked at the best way to negate the stifling hear in the summer.

The move has forced domestic league organisers to look at ways to work around the tournament, given a number of their players will be on international duty through large periods of November and December.

Although no teams (aside from host nation, Qatar) have booked their place at the Championships yet, Newcastle's current squad has five players who are regulars for their national side in Martin Dubravka (Slovakia), Fabian Schar (Switzerland), Emil Krafth (Sweden), Miguel Almiron (Paraguay) and Ryan Fraser (Scotland), who will hope to be involved in the competition.

FIFA has outlined players should leave their clubs to link up with their national teams on November 14, 2022, and BBC Sport report that Premier League chiefs are planning to start the 2022-23 season a week earlier than normal and finish a week later in order to create space for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The Premier League schedule for 2022-23 is still to be decided but it is envisaged more midweek dates will be required in order to fit in all 38 league fixtures.
