The Chelsea players in danger of being cut from Frank Lampard's Premier League squad

Chelsea have completed their pre-season and are getting ready to face Manchester United in their Premier League opener this weekend at Old Trafford.

The Blues had a decent summer as Frank Lampard looks to pick his strongest team for the season's beginner and then following it up with Liverpool in the Super Cup a week on Wednesday.

With the Blues in the middle of a transfer ban, Lampard will be using those who have been on loan or have come through the academy, but there is going to be at least one player who is cut from the Premier League squad.

At present, in his first team plans, Lampard has 18 non-homegrown players in his squad, however the Blues are only allowed 17 for the 2019/20 campaign.

The Premier League rule reads: "The 25-man Premier League squad list must include no more than 17 'non-homegrown' players over the age of 21. 'Homegrown' players are defined as those who irrespective of nationality or age, have been registered with any club affiliated to the FA or Welsh FA for a period of three entire seasons or 36 months prior to their 21st birthday (or the end of the season during which they turn 21).

"Players classed as under 21 (born on or after 1 January 1998 in the case of the 2019-20 season) may supplement the squad."

The fact that Christian Pulisic is under 21 means that he does not count as part of the 'non-homegrown' players rule, meaning that the Blues have 18 to choose from, but one will be cut.

Keepers: Kepa Arrizabalaga, Willy Caballero

Defenders: Marcos Alonso, Cesar Azpilicueta, David Luiz, Emerson Palmieri, Davide Zappacosta, Kurt Zouma, Antonio Rudiger.

Midfielders: Tiemoue Bakayoko, Jorginho, N'Golo Kante, Mateo Kovacic.

Forwards: Michy Batshuayi, Olivier Giroud, Kenedy, Pedro, Willian.

The likely candidates for the cut

The most likely candidates are those that have been out on loan, however Lampard has made it clear that he wants Kurt Zouma as part of his squad this season.

However, Michy Batshuayi, Kenedy and Tiemoue Bakayoko are in danger of being the ones who might not be part of the Premier League side.

"Nobody is in or out of the squad. There's nobody who has had a line drawn under them or over them.

"Everyone is competing and the squad will be picked in due time."

Kenedy was on loan at Newcastle United for the past 18 months and last season had a poor campaign in the North East, however Lampard has not ruled out that he might stick around.

"In terms of Kenedy, my feeling coming into a big squad with a transfer ban was that I need to asses the players for as long as I can in pre-season," he said.

"We need to make sure we pick a squad, with me having had good eyes on them in training and in games.

"If Kenedy continues to show the attitude and plays the way he played today, then he's given a great case to stay here.

"I know he has been out on loan in recent seasons, and been part of the squad."

The Brazilian did impress during the course of the summer as well, and should have done enough to be part of the squad.

Meanwhile, Bakayoko is struggling to fight for a spot in the first team, being yet to really make an impression in the pre-season friendlies.

He was even left out of the squad for the final two matches of the summer against RB Salzburg and Borussia Monchengladbach.

Batshuayi had a great start to the summer, however faded in pre-season and also wasn't part of the team who travelled to Germany last weekend.

Also, Davide Zappacosta may still leave before the foreign transfer window shuts at the end of August, with the Blues looking towards Reece James being their back-up to Cesar Azpilicueta.

Lampard is ready to give the younger players a chance, which means that Bakayoko and Zappacosta are expected to lose their place in the side.
