The Premier League game where Liverpool could equal Arsenal's unbeaten record and create history

Liverpool maintained their eight-point lead at the top of the Premier League table with a crushing 5-2 win over Everton in the Merseyside derby.

Jurgen Klopp's side blew away their local rivals, with goals from Divock Origi, Xherdan Shaqiri, Sadio Mane and Georginio Wijnaldum.

The victory at Anfield meant the Reds have now played 32 consecutive top-flight league games without losing a single one for the first time in the club’s 127-year history.

The last time Liverpool tasted defeat in the league was against Manchester City on 3 January when they were beaten 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium.

Ljungberg on fixing Arsenal's defence

Speaking after the match, Klopp admitted he wasn't focused on records.

"I would have loved that this number is in one season, that would be great," said the German.

"Last year we were nearly 38 games unbeaten, nearly but was not enough. A nice number, but I’m not really interested.

"Since one and a half two years it feels like we have to win each and every game, thank God the boys did it from time to time, so all the wins are really necessary."

Arsenal currently hold the record for the longest unbeaten run in English football, with Arsene Wenger's side going 49 games without tasting defeat between 2003 and 2005, before they were beaten by Sir Alex Ferguson's Manchester United at Old Trafford.

The Gunners won the title in 2003/04 without losing a match, something Liverpool are currently on course to emulate.

With the Reds' current run standing at 32 games unbeaten, if they continue to avoid defeat, they would be on track to equal Arsenal's record when they face Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium during the weekend of 4 April 2020.

If Pep Guardiola's side cannot repeat their win from last season, Liverpool would then be in position to break the Gunners' record and go 50 games unbeaten against Aston Villa at Anfield the following week.
