The pre-Wigan meeting Steve Cooper held with Swansea City players and the quality that's got them back on track

Steve Cooper said Swansea City's togetherness has been key to getting their season back on track with wins over Cardiff City and Wigan Athletic.

The Swans enjoyed a dream start to the campaign after going unbeaten in August but went on a run of just one win in eight games in all competitions after the first international break of the 2019/20 campaign.

However, having beaten South Wales rivals Cardiff 1-0 at the Liberty Stadium last weekend, Swansea moved to the top of the table after securing a dramatic 2-1 success over Wigan at the DW Stadium.

And Cooper admits the spirit in the camp has been absolutely key for the Swans so far this term.

"You have to believe in the players you're working with," said the head coach.

"I said to the players yesterday in a meeting, there's a few jobs on the weekend. Sometimes you don't even get changed or travel, but whatever part you play, there's still a part to play.

"Substitutions will get the headlines today, but it's a really good example of us working everybody every single day, getting them ready for games and a squad commitment from players themselves.

"We really do have a good togetherness and belonging at the club at the moment. That can help you get late winners and help you not concede late on as well as many other things."

Nathan Dyer's first goal of the campaign saw Swansea take an early lead against Paul Cook's troops, although they were pegged back soon after as Wales international Kieffer Moore converted from the penalty spot after Mike van der Hoorn had fouled Chey Dunkley.

However, two of Swansea's substitutes - Connor Roberts and Sam Surridge - combined at the death, with the latter heading home his fifth goal of the campaign in injury time to seal victory for the Swans.

And while he was delighted with the impact of the replacement, Cooper admits Dyer's opener was hugely pleasing having worked on that particular aspect in the buildup to the game.

"I loved the first goal. It was an area of the pitch we thought we could exploit Wigan, with cutbacks and filling the box up. That pleased me a lot," he added.

"You can't be too disappointed after winning away from home but we always want to get better.

"There is no individual credit for wins or blame for losses. This city and football club is about the collective and supporting each other through the highs and the lows.

"Connor comes on, slightly out of position, and puts in a fantastic cross, and Sam comes on and gets on the end of it. They'll get the headlines and get their names in the reports but I really thought it was a collective effort today."

Swansea face Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough next weekend in what is the final match before the international break.
