The potential VAR rule change that will ease Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham fans' concerns

Premier League clubs are calling for the Premier League to make a change to the offside rule following the introduction of VAR to stop the technology disallowing goals for marginal decisions.

As it stands, if an attacker is in front of the defender, even if only by millimeters, when the ball is played, then they are deemed to be in an offside position and the goal is disallowed.

However, according to the Times clubs have asked for a 10cm leeway to be introduced to the rule following 25 goals being ruled out for offside so far this season, with a number of the decisions proving to be marginal.

Premier League chief assesses VAR impact

The report claims that should a buffer of 10cm been introduced at the start of the season, nine of the goals that have been ruled out would have stood.

It is claimed that clubs were given three options at a meeting this week, with a leeway of either 10cm, 15cm and 20cm, with the chairman agreeing on the lower figure.

Fans have become frustrated with goals being chalked off due to the attacker's armpit being ruled to be beyond the defender, with the potential change in rule giving more freedom to the attacking player.

Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham have all been affected by marginal offside decisions made by VAR this season, either for or against them.

The Times reports that the Professional Games Match Officials Ltd (PGMOL) are ready to push the plans for a change forward, but for a change to happen, they will need the approval of the International FA board (IFAB).

Should a change happen, then it is also likely that the Champions League will follow suit by introducing a buffer zone for offside positions.
