The post-credit scene in ‘Captain Marvel’ seems to confirm a fan theory about ‘Endgame’

WARNING: This story contains spoilers from “Captain Marvel,” “Avengers: Infinity War” and, possibly,  for “Avengers: Endgame.”

So, uh, be warned.

Seriously, scram if you don’t want spoilers.

OK:

Captain Marvel appears to be the Avengers’ savior.

During a post-credit scene in “Captain Marvel,” the newly introduced superhero is seen being linked to the surviving Avengers at some point after Thanos’ snap of his fingers, which eradicated half of the universe.

In the post-credit scene, the surviving Avengers are shown struggling to operate a technologically upgraded two-way pager which Carol Danvers (a.k.a. Captain Marvel) gave Nick Fury in “Captain Marvel,” which hit theaters on Thursday night. The pager allows Fury to communicate with Danvers.

“Only for emergencies,” she told Fury.

Well, this probably qualifies.

In this post-apocalyptic moment, Captain America, Black Widow, Bruce Banner and James Rhodes are seen studying the pager, which they know is important because Fury activated it before he died. But they clearly can’t figure out what it does. Just as the pager goes blank, Captain Marvel appears.

“Where’s Fury?” she asks. And the scene ends.

Her appearance seemed to confirm what many Marvel fans already suspected. During “Avengers: Endgame,” she will serve as a heavy-hitter for the Avengers, who are coincidentally named after her fighter plane, “Avenger.” She was a pilot on earth before turning into a superhero, a process which involved Danvers absorbing the energy from an exploding super-powerful light-speed engine. That blast turned Captain Marvel into, arguably, the most power superhero in the the Marvel universe. Her powers seem to rival those of Thor. That’s what makes her arrival so important. She is essentially the Avenger’s trump card.

Her appearance in the post-credit scene also seems to eliminate the possibly that there will be time spent melodramatically waiting for her aid in “Endgame.” Instead, Marvel is straight-forward about including this superhero before the movie begins. In theory, “Endgame” will pick up after this scene leaves off. At that point, Captain Marvel will already be an integrated member of the team. Of course, there are now two captains in the group, Captain Marvel and Captain America. But with a common enemy in Thanos, they will probably be able to share the moniker.
