The post Champions League run Manchester United need to end vs West Ham

There is a peculiar mood around Manchester United ahead of their return to Premier League action this weekend.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side go into the home match against West Ham on the back of their fourth defeat in five games, yet there is positivity following their performance against Barcelona.

Many people had expected the gulf in quality to be apparent in the Champions League on Wednesday night, yet it was only an unfortunate own-goal which separated themselves from the Spanish champions.

Scott McTominay and Fred were both excellent in midfield during the defeat, and fans are now hoping they can replicate such performances again on Saturday evening.

However, West Ham are not only known for blowing bubbles, but bursting them as well.

Worryingly for Solskjaer is United's recent development for an European hangover and how they have struggled to cope with playing two games so close together.

In fact, United are winless in their last four Premier League games immediately following a European fixture and this can't afford to continue if they are to maintain their bid for top four football this weekend.

The run began under Jose Mourinho, albeit rather harshly against very difficult opposition.

The remarkable away win at Juventus in December was followed by defeat away against Man City in the league, while their late home win over Young Boys was succeeded by a dismal draw at Southampton.

Mourinho's end as United manager came after a defeat against Valencia in Europe was followed by another away defeat at Liverpool.

United were brought back down to earth again last month too, when following their heroic victory against Paris Saint-Germain defeat away at Arsenal beckoned.

It is worth noting the first-leg loss at PSG was followed by a win in the FA Cup, while the fact all the slip-ups came away from home might also be comforting ahead of Saturday night.
