The positions Mikel Arteta needs to strengthen in January and Arsenal's stance on transfers

The January transfer window will open on Wednesday and there is sure to be a flurry of activity.

Plenty of club will be looking to bolster their ranks mid-season to ensure the best possible second half of the campaign.

With Arsenal languishing in 12th place in the Premier League, just six points off the relegation places and with only one win in their last 12 matches, the supporters will be hoping to see new arrivals in the form of signings next month.

However, the winter window is not generally one in which the Gunners do a lot of business, with the ill-fated loan spell of Denis Suarez the only business they did this time last year.

Could Raul Sanllehi and Edu be encouraged to make moves this January though, with a new man in Mikel Arteta and new ideas at the helm?

And if they do where would they strengthen?

Defence

It is clear that Arsenal, despite bringing in Kieran Tierney and David Luiz in the summer, could do with further reinforcements at the back.

William Saliba will join the club next summer, following the end of his season-long loan at Saint Etienner, from whom the Gunners signed him this summer, but will they be busy in January in that department?

There have been links with plenty of players - namely the likes of RB Leipzig's Dayot Upamecano and Merih Demiral from Juventus.

But having spent that money in the summer, and with plenty of options at the back already, it would have to be a very good deal for Arsenal to get one over the line in January.

Midfield

Granit Xhaka looks likely to leave in January, with the Swiss star moving to Hertha Berlin in the Bundesliga.

Arsenal are likely to recoup a good sum of money for the midfielder and that could be spent on better options in the middle of the park.

If he leaves, Arteta will want to bring another body into the club and there are options on that front too, with another Juventus player in Adrien Rabiot linked with a loan move.

James Benge on Arsenal's January transfer plans

Raul Sanllehi has described January as a "tactical" window so those fans begging for radical overhauls mid-season will be left disappointed.

However there could be business done in the coming weeks.

Much will depend on outgoings, particularly Granit Xhaka. Arsenal don't want to lose him midway through the season but he has made clear that he wants to return to the Bundesliga with Hertha Berlin.

The Gunners want to recoup as much of the £35million they spent on the 27-year-old as possible and are expected to let him go if a replacement can be found.

Arsenal are long-term admirers of Adrien Rabiot and it appears he could be allowed to leave Juventus, at least on loan, midway through the season. Signing him on a temporary basis would give Sanllehi, Edu and the rest of the club hierarchy the flexibility to reassess the market in the summer.

Adding a centre-back would be a popular decision but Arsenal are numerically strong in that area even if quality is severely lacking. Selling Shkodran Mustafi would open up a space in the squad, as could a loan deal for Konstantinos Mavropanos. If Calum Chambers' injury proves to be a lengthy one that could also send the Gunners into the market for a problem position.

football.london understands that Merih Demiral, like Rabiot on the fringes at Juventus, has been broached as a possible option but there are no guarantees that a centre-back will arrive.
