The popular baby name that New Zealand has banned

  • New Zealand is enforcing a ban on names that resemble official titles, such as King, Prince, and Princess.
  • Eleven applications to name children "King" were declined in the past year, along with several requests for "Prince," "Princess," and "Pryncess".
  • This contrasts with the United States, where those names are rising in popularity. King ranked 266th among the most popular baby names in 2023, with Royal at 402, Prince at 364, and Princess at 919.
  • The top baby names in the US and New Zealand for 2024 are remarkably similar. Both countries listed Olivia, Amelia, Charlotte and Mia among the top five for girls, with Oliver, Noah, and Theodore among the top five for boys.
  • New Zealand's naming regulations also limit names to 70 characters and exclude non-standard symbols.
