The ponchos are out and the pubs are filling up: Thousands of fans gather across city for crunch England game

Thousands of fans have braved the rain to gather across the city as England prepare to take on Ukraine in the Euro 2020 quarter-finals.

The three lions will take on the Ukrainians at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome tonight at 8pm to fight for a place in the semi-finals.

Despite a yellow warning of thunderstorms for our region, scores of England fans have ventured out to watch the crunch match.

The rain has just started lashing it down across the city centre, but that's not deterred fans - many of whom have become prepared with rain-proof ponchos.

It's Manchester after all - when has a little rain ever deterred us?

Thousands of supporters have arrived at a dedicated fan park at Event City in Trafford.

Tables of six separated by metal fencing means fans can watch the game on a big screen with the kind of atmosphere we've all missed over the last 18 months.

All covid rules and social distancing rules are all still being adhered to.

Video footage shows the moment a group of fans attempted to engage the crowd in a chant about Harry Maguire as more the mood at the fan park begins to liven up.

The Northern Quarter is also already packed with fans donning England shirts and cradling pints.

Bars and pubs around Exchange Square and the Printworks are already giving off a buzz, as revellers get those pre-match rounds in.

Italy previously warned England fans not to fly to Rome to watch the quarter-final game, even those who have a ticket.

"Anybody who has been in the UK in the previous 14 days, irrespective of their nationality or residency will not be admitted to the stadium, even if they have a ticket," the Italian embassy in London said.

"Only those who can prove that they have arrived in Italy at least six days previously, have observed five days of quarantine, and have taken a post-quarantine Covid-19 test with a negative result will be allowed into the Stadio Olimpico."

Despite this, many English supports appear to have been pictured in the Italian capital holding banners and flags.

But for those in Greater Manchester that have decided to stay a bit closer to home, it looks to be a brilliant night.
