The Politician on Netflix: Gwyneth Paltrow stars in trailer for Ryan Murphy's new drama

Netflix has released the first trailer of its new show The Politician, starring Gwyneth Paltrow.

The programme, which is set to premiere next month, documents the rise of Payton Hobart, a wealthy student whose goal is to become the President of the United States.

As part of his dream, the character runs for the role of student president of his Californian high school.

The cast for the show includes Pitch Perfect star Ben Platt, 25, – who plays Payton, Paltrow, 46, who plays his mother Georgina and Bohemian Rhapsody’s Lucy Boynton, 25.

In the dramatic trailer, Payton is seen announcing his running mate for his campaign, before quickly sacking her when he discovers she used a slur towards a gay news reporter.

He is later seen ramping up his campaign against Boynton – who plays his rival Astrid – vying for support from students and being accused of a crime.

The hotly-anticipated series is created by Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Ian Brennan, the team behind Glee and Scream Queens.

Describing the show, Netflix said: “To get elected Student Body President, secure a spot at Harvard, and stay on his singular path to success, Payton will have to outsmart his ruthless classmates without sacrificing his own morality and carefully crafted image.

Rival: Lucy Boynton plays Platt's opponent

“Full of dark comedy and sly satire, Ryan Murphy's The Politician offers a rare glimpse into just what it takes to make a politician.”

The other members of the cast include Jessica Lange, Zoey Deutch, Julia Schlaepfer, Laura Dreyfuss, Rahne Jones, Theo Germaine, David Corenswet, Bob Balaban and Benjamin Barrett.

The first season consists of eight hour-long episodes and is produced by Fox 21 Television Studios.

The Politician will premiere on Netflix on September 27
