The police shooting of Adam Toledo and its aftermath

Chicago police shot and killed a 13-year-old boy in what officials described as an “armed confrontation” in Little Village on March 29.

Authorities said police body camera recordings and other videos that captured an officer shooting Adam Toledo would be released “as soon as possible,” although they did not say when the footage would be made available. Mayor Lori Lightfoot and CPD Supt. David Brown are among those who have asked for the release of the video.

The Cook County medical examiner said Toledo was shot in the chest in an alley west of the 2300 block of South Sawyer Avenue near Farragut Career Academy High School.

In a statement, police said officers responded to calls of gunfire about 2:35 a.m. that morning and saw two males. One person, who was allegedly armed, ran from the scene and was shot by an officer during the “armed confrontation,” police said.

That person, later identified as Toledo, died at the scene, police said.

It wasn’t until two days later that the boy’s mother was notified of his death — and three days later until authorities revealed publicly that he was just 13 years old. After that disclosure, the fatal police shooting quickly drew widespread media attention and prompted some protests.
