The points totals Leeds United and their promotion rivals are tipped to finish on this season

West Brom are being backed to edge out Leeds United in the race to be crowned Championship champions.

That's according to Five Thirty Eight , which has created a data model to predict the Championship finish.

Albion are tipped to win the league by finishing three points clear of the Whites in second.

The Baggies now have a massive 94 percent chance of being promoted and a 63 percent possibility of winning the title. They forecast a points total of 88 for Slaven Bilic's side.

Despite their blip last month, Marcelo Bielsa's Leeds are predicted to finish comfortably in second with 85 points, nine points clear of Brentford in third.

The Whites also have an 87 percent chance of promotion and a 33 percent chance of winning the title.

Brentford (76 points), Nottingham Forest (74), Fulham (74) and Preston (71) are all tipped to finish in the play-off places.

At the other end of the table, Wigan Athletic, Barnsley and Luton Town are all predicted to be relegated.

How it works

Five Thirty Eight predict the outcome for the season using SPI ratings, which the website says are their best estimate of a team's overall strength. Each team is given an attacking rating that represents the number of goals it is expected to score against an average team, and a defensive rating to represent the amount of goals it would concede.

Those ratings produce an overall SPI rating, which represents the percentage of points it would be expected to take on average from a game. Those ratings are then compared to an opposition's rating to simulate the outcome of a match.

From that, it is possible to simulate the outcome of a whole season.
