The Pogues weigh in on Bon Jovi's Fairytale of New York cover – and they don't seem too impressed

Jon Bon Jovi has stunned music fans with his cover of Fairytale of New York – and not at all in a good way.

Even The Pogues – the creators of the legendary Christmas tune – have got in on the action, tweeting their displeasure at a cover released by the Livin' on a Prayer star in recent days.

Bon Jovi's version of Livin' on a Prayer includes lyrical changes that have left many appalled, and prompted a huge backlash on social media.

The Pogues, never a band to mince their words, wrote: "What Rob said", in a retweet of a highly critical message that called the cover "the worst thing to ever happen music."

Ouch.

Legendary Pogues frontman Shane MacGowan penned Fairytale of New York in the late 1980s, singing it alongside folk artist Kirsty MacColl.

Some of the lyrics in the song – including homophobic and misogynistic slurs – have proved contentious in recent times, with some radio stations changing or blurring out segments.

But what most of probably did not expect was for Bon Jovi (who just months ago wrongly claimed Bono had suffered violence threats from the Orange Order) to weigh in on Irish culture again with a reimagining of the song.

His version, released earlier this week, changes the fifth verse so it now reads: "You're a bum, you're a braggart / You've lost all your swagger / And the word around town is you ain't much in bed / You're a squirrel 'cause you're nuts / You're a kick in the gut / Happy Christmas my arse / I'll be glad it's our last."

The news comes after users of Amazon's Alexa reported the device was refusing to allow them to play the tune without disabling the 'profanity filter'.
