The Podge and Rodge Show has been cancelled after comeback, RTE has confirmed

The Podge and Rodge Show has been cancelled after just one season, RTÉ has confirmed.

The foul-mouthed puppet brothers made a comeback last year after an eight year break, with Doireann Garrihy replacing Lucy Kennedy at the helm.

But the doors of Ballydung Manor have closed yet again after just one series which featured guests such as Erin McGregor, Made in Chelsea's Josh 'JP' Patterson, radio DJ Eoghan McDermott and Love Island's Kaz Crossley.

The national broadcaster told RSVP Live: "RTÉ can confirm that The Podge and Rodge Show will not be returning."

A source said that the decision to axe the show was "very disappointing news" for everyone involved.

"We felt that the show was funny and the live audience really added a new dimension," the insider told The Irish Mail on Sunday.

"Doireann was a breath of fresh air and really, for someone who had never done any live television before, she was a real professional.

"But the decision was made by RTÉ to keep it at just one series which is very disappointing."

When asked about the return of the show earlier in this month, co-host Doireann Garrihy admitted she was kept in the dark about the future of the show.

She told Irish Daily Mirror: “I'm not sure like...We signed up for one series, and we did that and had an absolute ball and it was a great hit with brilliant feedback.

"It was a great introduction to TV for me because it wasn’t my show, I was kind of just a facilitator and I didn’t have to be crude like they were but it's been an amazing experience.

"But I’m not sure which way it is going to go, but that’s the nature of the business.

"It could be back at the end of the year, could be whenever, I could get a call where they say ‘we are going again’ in two weeks time. And the lads, Podge and Rodge, they prepared me for that, so yeah.”

Podge and Rodge made their debut on The Den in 1990, before getting their own show in 2006.

A Scare at Bedtime continued until 2010 before taking a long hiatus.
