Adomaa – The Evolution of GH Music
In what appears to be a trademark trick, singer Adomaa playfully re-creates music by her fellow Ghanaian artists (as she did here). This more recent exercise runs through six decades of modern Ghanaian music from its European-influenced beginnings to Highlife, and its urban hybrid Hiplife, right up to the more current Afro-pop incarnations. Look out for highlights such as classics by Osibisa, Reggie Rockstone and Fuse ODG.
Ntjam Rosie – Forever Love
From what we’ve ascertained from her fourth and latest album, The One, Ntjam Rosie is a woman in love. Born in Cameroon where she lived until age nine, Ntjam wrote most of the album’s songs after she got married early last year. In her usual classy and breezy manner, this video celebrates her vows with her husband, who co-stars – they are expecting their first child.
Mashayabhuqe KaMamba - Izayoni featuring Thandiswa Mazwai
Young South African artist Mashayabhuqe KaMamba, a KwaZulu Natal native who now lives in Johannesburg, is the pioneer of his own genre, Digital Maskandi – an amalgamation of all his musical influences including trap, electronic soul and traditional Maskandi music. Thandiswa Mazwai is a longtime inspiration and a fitting collaborator.
Asa – Eyo
Paris-based singer-songwriter Asa takes to the streets of Lagos, with direction from London filmmaker and photographer Meji Alabi, for a slice of everyday Nigerian life. Eyo is the second single from her critically acclaimed album Bed of Stone, co-written and produced by Blair McKichan (Sia, Lily Allen).
Philou Louzolo - Beng Beng Beng featuring Cool Joe and Elvira
The Alkebulan project is a collective of African artists and writers who aim to release a series of EPs as well as a book. Beng Beng Beng featuring Cool Joe and Elvira is the first music instalment by Philou Louzolo, a producer, DJ and recording artist based in the Netherlands and of Nigerian/Sierra Leonean/Congolese descent.
