The players Stuart Webber could sign if he became Manchester United technical director

Manchester United's search for a technical director continues, as the club faces a big squad rebuild this summer.

Ander Herrera and Antonio Valencia's departures have already been confirmed, with more likely to follow, as United look to improve on their sixth place finish last season with a raft of new signings predicted.

The likes of Rio Ferdinand, Darren Fletcher, Mike Phelan and Paul Mitchell have already been linked with the technical director role in recent weeks, as the club weigh up whether to recruit an ex-player, or go for an experienced transfer guru.

The latest name to be linked with the role at Old Trafford is Norwich City's Sporting Director Stuart Webber, who played a major role in their successful squad rebuild last summer, which lead to the Canaries being promoted to the Premier League.

The ex-Huddersfield Town Sporting Director, who was a scout for the likes of Wolves, QPR and Liverpool previously, has been praised for his success in the transfer market in his previous roles, with a preference for signing under-the-radar players, and could be an interesting option for United this summer.

So, who would Webber sign if he became technical director? And, who would he sell?

We used the highly respected Football Manager 2019 database to find out...

Manchester United's transfers with Stuart Webber as technical director

To find out who Webber would sign, we used popular football management simulation game Football Manager 2019 to simulate the 2019/20 summer transfer window.

We went into the Football Manager 2019 editor, added in Webber in as director of football, which is FM's version of a technical director, and then skipped ahead to the 2019/20 season to see what happened.

This is Webber's profile, with the most important Technical Director attributes highlighted.

Here are all the transfers he was involved in for Manchester United, including both incomings and outgoings - according to FM.

Transfers in: £122 million

Houssem Aouar (Lyon) - £61 million

Marcelo Brozovic (Inter Milan) - £36.5 million

Willian Jose (Real Sociedad) - £15.75 million

Tonny Vilhena (Feyenoord) - £8.25 million

Transfers out: £0 million

This is what the United XI looked like at the start of the 2019/20 season, with Webber as Technical Director....

De Gea; Darmian, Jones, Lindelof, Shaw; Vilhena, Brozovic; Aouar, Pogba, Rashford; Willian Jose. (4-2-3-1)

According to Football Manager 2019, Webber would not be phased by the job at Old Trafford and would continue his policy of signing players who fitted the right profile, regardless of if they have a big reputation or not.

He would spend around £122 million on players who aren't necessarily household names, but they are all exciting talents who are at good ages.

Midfielder Aouar is one of the best midfield talents in Europe, Brozovic is a very talented Croatian midfielder, Willian Jose is a powerful Brazilian striker and Vilhena is a technically gifted Dutch midfielder.

However, he didn't think he needed to sell any of their current squad, which might come back to haunt him.

It might not be what United fans are used to, not signing any big names, but it might be what they need.
