'The players put their bodies on the line' - Lee Johnson provides injury update on key Bristol City duo

Andi Weimann will undergo an x-ray today to assess the extent the severity of the foot injury which forced him off against Middlesbrough but Bristol City head coach Lee Johnson is hopeful Korey Smith will make a quick recovery.

Weimann had to leave the field shortly after the start of the second half at the Riverside after a Boro defender stood on his foot and was replaced by Smith who later had to leave the field with his own injury.

The Austrian, who has scored nine goals this season including a hat-trick against Sheffield United on Saturday, was later pictured in the dugout with a brace on and with a crutch by his side.

The squad returned to Bristol today with the forward to be assessed by the club's medical staff. Losing him would be extremely inconvenient given his excellent performance at Bramall Lane and the pace and direct running he bring to the Robins attack.

Johnson told BBC Radio Bristol: "Weimann took a quite a nasty stamp on the top of the foot so we’ll have to assess that one. Probably X-ray it as early as we can."

Smith also had to leave the field in the second half, two minutes from the end of time having taken a bang to his knee.

The midfielder had only returned to first-team action on Saturday following a seventh-month absence with a knee injury and Johnson is hopeful it's just bruising as opposed to anything more serious.

“I think Korey will be alright, it was just precautionary," Johnson added. "He felt something in the knee so we’re praying that one will be alright."

As expected, it was a real physically-demanding encounter in the north east and Johnson saluted his players for their effort they display, especially due to the fact it was just three days after the energy expended in beating Sheffield United.

"It was always going to be a difficult environment to deal with and Middlesbrough have got quality players," Johnson added.

"But the players put their bodies on their line and worked their socks off and got numbers behind the ball.

"I’m always proud of the team because they come in and work hard every day."
