The players Mike Phelan could sign if he became Manchester United technical director

Manchester United have a big summer coming up, with the squad in need of a major overhaul ahead of next season.

However, United have yet to appoint a technical director to oversee both incoming and outgoing transfers in what is a hugely important role in a modern-day football club, especially one of this stature.

There have been a lot of names linked with the vacant technical director position over the last 12 months, including the likes of Monchi, Paul Mitchell, Darren Fletcher and even Rio Ferdinand.

Assistant Manager Mike Phelan has also been linked with the role in recent weeks.

So, who would Phelan sign if he became technical director? And, who would he sell?

We used Football Manager 2019 to find out...

To find out who Phelan would sign, we used popular football management simulation game Football Manager 2019 to simulate the 2019/20 summer transfer window.

We went into the Football Manager 2019 editor, added in Phelan as director of football, which is FM's version of a technical director, and then skipped ahead to the 2019/20 season to see what happened.

This is Phelan's profile, with the most important Technical Director attributes highlighted.

This is what the United XI looked like at the start of the 2019/20 season, with Phelan as Technical Director....

De Gea; Dalot, Thiago Silva, Lenglet, Shaw; Rice, Thiago, Pogba; Rashford, Werner, Martial.

According to Football Manager 2019, Phelan is not afraid to splash the cash, spending just over £200 million on a mix of young and experienced players, who would add a lot of quality to the United first team.

He signs both Thiago Silva and Clement Lenglet to improve the defence, with Thiago and Declan Rice brought in to make the midfield a lot stronger.

He also signs Timo Werner, an exciting forward player who can add competition to United's attack.

Phelan certaintly did a good job in-game, but would he be as good in real life?
