The player Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants to partner Harry Maguire in Man Utd defence

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is plotting to have two ball-playing defenders at the heart of his backline next season, according to reports.

Manchester United's pursuit of Harry Maguire is no secret with the Red Devils big favourites to tie up an £80million deal for the Leicester centre-half.

And, if he lands his No.1 defensive target, Solskjaer will partner England stopper Maguire with Victor Lindelof, according to The Independent.

United have been linked with other centre-backs including Tottenham's Toby Alderweireld and Napoli's Kalidou Koulibaly.

But Alderweireld now expects to stay at Tottenham despite being heavily linked with a move to Roma while interest in Koulibaly has cooled.

Instead, Solskjaer looks set to turn to a player already at his disposal in Lindelof.

Lindelof moved to Old Trafford in a £30million deal two years ago and has had an inconsistent start to life at Old Trafford.

But the Swede managed 40 appearances in all competitions last term and looks set to get the nod to partner Maguire should the former Hull and Sheffield United man arrive at the Theatre of Dreams.

Solskjaer is keen to have two centre-halves who are comfortable with the ball at their feet as they are likely to be flanked by new arrival Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Luke Shaw - both attacking full-backs.

United would like Maguire's arrival to lead to Marcos Rojo's exit from the club, but the Old Trafford hierarchy are yet to find a side willing to pay their £20million valuation for the Argentine.
