The player Joe Montemurro tips as a future Arsenal Women captain

Departing Arsenal boss Joe Montemurro has tipped Katie McCabe as a future captain of the side.

The Ireland international signed a new contract this week after a great season, including 12 assists and four goals.

And her manager - who leaves the club at the end of the season - says she could be a pivotal part of the team for years to come.

"She's now got a real opportunity to go to the next step," he told the media on Friday afternoon. "She's already the captain of her country but she will be a real leader of this club.

"She'll be part of the leadership group going forward and I wouldn't be surprised if she one day becomes the captain of Arsenal Women."

The Gunners face Aston Villa on Sunday afternoon in their final Barclays FA Women's Super League fixture of the season with Champions League football next season all but confirmed - but their opponents are still in a relegation battle and need a win to ensure survival.

And Montemurro says his side will go out and give their all as usual - and continue their unbeaten run that currently stands at 10 games.

"We're playing with very little pressure. We want to achieve certain goals - getting to that 50 points, finish the season in the way that we've been going over the last few weeks.

"We expect they will be more conservative in terms of not giving us much room or space in our attacking third. We've come up against that before and we're going to try that we do what we need to do to get through."

Montemurro confirmed that he will be without Jen Beattie and Viki Schnaderbeck, and Lisa Evans is unlikely to play again this season ahead of his departure following the Women's FA Cup clash with Crystal Palace next Sunday.
