The Platform ending explained: Netflix horror's disturbing twist laid bare

New horror film The Platform has left its Netflix viewers with a lot of food for thought.

The Spanish thriller from director Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia is set inside The Hole, a vertical-shaped prison that houses a large number of inmates.

However, not everyone inside is treated as fairly as they should be, as those in the higher levels of the structure take advantage of the food lowered down to them.

This leaves those at the bottom of The Hole struggling without the resources those above them get.

Events increasingly begin to spiral out of control, leaving viewers wondering just exactly the chaos will conclude.

If you've seen the ending and want to know what it all means, read on, but otherwise - be warned - there are spoilers ahead the horror movie.

The Platform ending explained

As we continue to follow prisoner Goreng (Ivan Massague) inside the dwelling, we realise how corrupt the system of prison is as he exists amongst the violence of Level 48, an area that gets the scraps that other levels in the prison do not want.

Goreng's experience only worsens when he is assigned to other levels of the prison - including some that are lower down and have barely any food to survive on. Other inmates even resort into eating human flesh to live off of.

Later in the film we are introduced to a young girl trying to survive inside the squalid conditions.

It later comes to light that the girl is the daughter of inmate Miharu (Alexandrea Masangkay) and her mother has been trying to ensure the girl survives the system.

As Goreng and the girl attempt to get to the higher levels in the prison, it soon becomes clear that Goreng has been too beaten down by his experiences to ascend.

However, the young girl appears to find her way to safety.

A beacon of hope in the dark times of the capitalist system that the prison represents?

Speaking to Digital Spy, director Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia explained: "Ultimately I wanted it to be open to interpretation, whether the plan worked and the higher-ups even care about the people in the pit. "

He added: "We actually did film a different ending of the girl arriving at the first level, but we took it out of the movie."

The Platform is available now on Netflix.
