The plan to stop a no-deal Brexit has officially become law

A backbench Bill to try block a no-deal Brexit has officially become law.

The new law is designed to stop the Government forcing through a no-deal and has now received Royal Assent.

The Queen's granting of approval for the legislation was announced by the Lord Speaker in the House of Lords, ahead of the suspension or prorogation of Parliament expected late this evening.

The new Act requires a delay to Brexit beyond October 31 unless a divorce deal is approved or Parliament agrees to leaving the EU without one by October 19.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has previously branded it the "surrender Bill", claiming it took away control of the UK's negotiations with the EU by allowing Parliament to block no-deal.

Downing Street has said the Government will obey the law, but repeated that the PM would not be seeking another extension to the Article 50 withdrawal process.

The European Union (Withdrawal) (No. 6) Bill is intended to avoid, or at least to delay, the UK’s departure from the European Union in the absence of a ratified withdrawal agreement.

On Tuesday, September 3, opposition MPs took control of the order paper and the following there was a subsequent debate.

The Bill gives the Government until Saturday, October 19 to do seek and secure the approval of MPs for either a withdrawal agreement, or leaving the European Union without a withdrawal agreement.

If by the end of October 19, the House of Commons has done neither of these things, the Prime Minister must then ask the European Council for an extension of Article 50 until January 31, 2020.

If at any time after October 19, a withdrawal agreement were approved by the Commons, or the Commons decides the UK should leave without a deal, the Prime Minister can withdraw or modify his Article 50 extension request.
