The places where you are exempt from wearing a face covering

The government announced new restrictions in response to the emergence of the Omicron variant of Covid-19.

It includes new guidance to work from home wherever possible, a mandatory NHS Covid Pass and mandatory face coverings in certain settings.

From Friday, December 10, face coverings will be legally required on public transport, any indoor venue that is not exempt such as places of worship, cinemas, hotels and more.

But there are some settings where you are exempt from wearing a face covering.

The government website on Covid-19 guidance states that it is not recommended to wear a face mask while exercising or doing strenuous physical activity.

Despite this, it is recommended to wear a face covering when not legally required in crowded and enclosed spaces.

Settings where you are exempt from wearing a face mask

Hospitality settings such as cafes, restaurants and pubs are automatically exempt because it's not practical to keep removing face coverings to eat or drink.

Nightclubs and other night-time venues such as dance halls and discotheques are also exempt as dancing comes under doing strenuous physical activity.

Other settings that are exempt include:

  • Restaurants, cafes and canteens.
  • Bars and shisha bars.
  • Gyms and exercise facilities.
  • Photography studios.
  • Nightclubs, dance halls and discotheques.
