The places near Bristol which could be underwater by 2050

In just 30 years a number of towns and villages located near to Bristol could be lost forever, if experts' predictions are correct.

Areas of Patchway, Portishead, Weston-super-Mare, Clevedon and Burnham-on-Sea could all be destroyed by rising waters in less than three decades, environmental scientists have warned.

Residents would be forced to flee their homes and move inland, according to new research released this week.

The map, named the Coastal Risk Screening Tool, makes for alarming viewing. It shows a number of North Somerset communities are at risk, as well as parts of the M5, according to Somerset Live.

Climate Central, which comprises scientists and journalists focusing on the growing impact of climate change, published the data.

Researchers used the current projections for the rising of sea levels, as well as land elevations to identify areas that could be in danger of increased flooding or total submersion.

The report, titled Flooded Future: Global vulnerability to sea level rise worse than previously understood, states: "Sea level rise is one of the best known of climate change’s many dangers.

"As humanity pollutes the atmosphere with greenhouse gases, the planet warms. And as it does so, ice sheets and glaciers melt and warming sea water expands, increasing the volume of the world’s oceans.

"The consequences range from near-term increases in coastal flooding that can damage infrastructure and crops to the permanent displacement of coastal communities.

"Over the course of the 21st century, global sea levels are projected to rise between about two and seven feet, and possibly more."
