The places near Bristol forecast to be underwater in future

Hundreds of homes and businesses across the South West are under threat from rising sea levels.

Rapid sea level rise will be one of the many devastating outcomes if climate change is not urgently tackled.

A report by Climate Central, a nonprofit news organization that analyzes climate science, shows the seas could rise by as much as 10.8 metres if temperatures went up 4C from pre-industrial levels.

Such bleak predictions have sparked huge protests from environmental groups who have urged Governments across the world to take immediate action.

One such action was a five-day demonstration by Extinction Rebellion which brought Bristol to a standstill back in July.

The interactive map below shows what would happen to towns and cities across the south west if sea levels rose by 10 metres.

Experts say the most likely sea level rise is about nine metres but that would still leave homes submerged in several places, including Weston-super-Mare, Clevedon and Portishead.

It would not happen overnight but a steady increase within the next 100 years would see sea levels reach their highest levels.

According to Climate Central, even if temperatures are kept within 2C, around 130 million people could still lose their homes.

If temperatures went up even further by 4C, half a billion people will have their homes submerged.

The warmer climate makes the seas rise for three reasons.

  1. Ice caps melt:  Massive ice sheets at the poles melt faster than they form from snowfall.
  2. The ocean expands:  The seas expand as they get warmer.
  3. High altitude ice: As the planet warms the ice at altitude like on Everest will melt at a much higher point.
