The places in Wales with the lowest Covid rates as cases start to rise again

There are only 11 places in Wales which have a Covid infection rate below 200.

The latest figures from Public Health Wales shows that there are only five areas of Wales which have seen fewer than 10 cases over the last seven days and only 11 which have seen the number of cases per 100,000 of population below 200.

This data was first released on Monday, November 15. It provides the numbers for areas with an average of 7,000 people, called middle super output areas (MSOA). In practice this means there are statistics for areas like Canton in Cardiff, Morriston in Swansea, and Porth in Rhondda.

The areas with an infection rate below 200 are:

  • Rhos-y-bol, Marian-glas & Moelfre, Anglesey - 109.1
  • Denbigh West, Denbighshire - 114.7
  • Abersoch & Aberdaron, Gwynedd - 119.1
  • Newtown South, Powys - 139.4
  • Brynmill, Swansea - 147.3
  • Pyle, Kenfig Hill & Cefncribwr, Bridgend - 150.7

Some of these places with the lowest Covid rates in Wales have been historically some of the areas with the highest rates in Wales at times during the pandemic. For example Cathays in Cardiff has previously has previously topped lists of infection rate due to its large student population when universities reopened in October 2020.

There are now three areas of Wales with Covid infection rates of more than 1,000 cases per 100,000 people which you can view here.

This map shows the number of coronavirus cases per 100,000 people for each area in the last seven days:

Though Covid cases across Wales had been on a downward trajectory over the last 10 days there are signs things are continuing to increase again.

The latest seven-day infection rate across Wales, based on the cases for every 100,000 people (for the seven days up to November 10) now stands at 482.1 – a rise from the 469.3 reported on Sunday. Last Thursday, the seven-day infection rate went down below 500 for the first time since early October.
