Philadelphia, the birthplace of the United States, is set to give China a brotherly hug by hoisting a communist flag near City Hall, with the city’s Office of Immigrant Affairs planning to fly the red flag of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) on September 30 to celebrate the anniversary of the CCP’s establishment. It’s actually not even the first time the city has done this; it’s flown the CCP flag twice before, back in 2017 and 2019.
This isn’t just any random spot in the city, which is what makes the situation feel like night and day compared to Philadelphia’s history. The City Hall site where this CCP flag is proposed to be raised is less than a mile from a couple of the most sacred, historically significant spots in American history.
We’re talking about the small house on Arch Street where Betsy Ross, according to legend, stitched the first American flag at the direct request of George Washington. The Stars and Stripes was then adopted in 1777 and was flown proudly during the Revolutionary War, the war that actually brought us our independence. Almost adjacent to Ross’s house is the site of John Dunlap’s press. This is where the first printed copies of the Declaration of Independence in 1776 and the Constitution in 1788 were literally disseminated to the public.
Philly to hang a flag to celebrate Chinese culture
Historically, Philadelphians would jubilantly lift the first printed copies of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, a tradition that carried a big air of defiance against the sort of authoritarianism represented by groups like the CCP today. Philly is known as the birthplace of liberty, and now, we’re preparing to celebrate our nation’s huge semiquincentennial next year. This country was founded by immigrants, and celebrations are good.

The proposed event is being sponsored by the Pennsylvania United Chinese Coalition. This coalition is part of a larger, organized network of such organizations that are attempting to boost the awareness of the culture of Chinese citizens. These are the same people who make up part of the population of Philly. The city has other celebrations for its Chinese Philadelphians, like the annual Lantern Festival, which highlights traditional culture and even benefits the upkeep of Philadelphia landmarks.
Chinese citizens celebrating their culture is good, and it’s hard for any culture to avoid being close to America’s own historical sites while in Philly. Most understand we’re getting close to a trade war with China, but that’s not really an issue for the people here. Still, despite what Fox News would have you believe, the American culture is one of many others put together. Despite the current issues between the US and China, without China, we wouldn’t have Bone Glue.
