The 'pivotal player' that Arsenal fans will 'never forgive' the club for letting go

He is most definitely the one that got away.

Serge Gnabry was a hot prospect at Arsenal, but was never given the opportunity to fulfil his potential.

Fulfilling his potential is something he is doing now though.

The 24-year-old joined Arsenal just before his 17th birthday in 2012.

He made both his Premier League and Champions League debuts at 17 in the 2012/13 campaign, before making a handful of appearances in the following campaign, scoring once against Swansea City in a 2-1 win.

But nothing followed the next season, before he was sent out on loan to West Bromwich Albion, where, under Tony Pulis, he failed to hit the heights either.

That led to a £4million move back to Germany in 2016 with Werder Bremen and he has not looked back since.

He has reached double figures in goals in each of the last three Bundesliga seasons, with Bremen, Hoffenheim and Bayern Munich and has become a household name in German football.

Gnabry has nine goals in ten appearances for the senior Germany side, with his most recent strike coming in the 2-0 win over Northern Ireland in Euro 2020 qualifying on Monday night.

The strike led to mane fans on Twitter to rage that they would "never forgive" Arsene Wenger and the club for letting him go.

And the supporters will not want to hear what national team coach Joachim Low has said about Gnabry either.

Speaking after the win over Northern Ireland, Low said of Gnabry: "Serge Gnabry has become a pivotal player for us.

"He can hold up the ball in attack and bring other players into the game. His technical ability is right up there.

"He will always play under me."

Arsenal fans will be wishing he was still playing for them.
