The pitch where Cardiff City play their first pre-season match in America this week is so shocking a game was just called off

Cardiff City's American tour could get off to a bumpy start after the venue for their first match was forced to postpone a match on Sunday due to the state of its playing surface.

Toyota Field, which will host Cardiff's clash with San Antonio FC this Sunday, was meant to host a friendly between C.F. Monterrey and Club Leon last Sunday.

But the poor condition of the pitch meant the game never took place.

A statement from San Antonio FC read: "The scheduled exhibition match between Liga MX sides C.F. Monterrey and Club Leon at Toyota Field this Sunday, July 7 has been postponed due to ongoing repairs to the playing surface.

"Both clubs, along with event and venue officials, were involved in the decision to postpone after meeting to evaluate the situation earlier today."

The reason for the condition of the pitch is being put down to the extreme weather San Antonio has been hit with. A mixture of heavy rainfall and storms followed by a heatwave has taken its toll on the surface, although staff are understood to be doing everything they can to improve things for the Cardiff friendly.

The Bluebirds are confident everything will go ahead as planned, although they are obviously yet to inspect the pitch themselves.

Cardiff will be wary of the injury risks playing a pre-season friendly on a poor surface could bring.

Neil Warnock's side are due to play San Antonio at 1am UK time on Sunday before a match against New Mexico United in the early hours of Friday morning and a clash with Real Valladolid in Edmonton, Canada, on Sunday morning.
