The picture which could save Newcastle United's season as Saint-Maximin returns to training

Newcastle United have received a huge boost in their bid to avoid relegation with Allan Saint-Maximin's return to light training.

The Magpies shared the positive update with a picture of the French attacker together with top scorer Callum Wilson on Thursday afternoon.

Saint-Maximin has been restricted to just 17 appearances so far this season following a succession of injuries, and was recently ruled out until April with a groin complaint picked up in the 1-1 draw with Wolves.

The 24-year-old appears to be on course to return to action next month judging by the latest update, as Steve Bruce's side bid to preserve their Premier League status with just nine matches remaining.

Saint-Maximin joined Wilson on the training pitches as the England international continues his own recovery following a hamstring injury suffered against Southampton.

No date has yet been given for the pair's return to competitive action, with United back in action against Tottenham at St James' Park on April 4.

Miguel Almiron was also sidelined with an injury sustained against Wolves, and made his return in the defeat at Brighton last weekend.

The squad were granted two days off at the beginning of the week, with Ciaran Clark, Martin Dubravka, Ryan Fraser, Jeff Hendrick and Elliot Anderson all away on international duty.
