The Phantom of the Opera is heading to Sunderland Empire in 2020

Smash hit West End musical The Phantom of The Opera is heading to Sunderland Empire Theatre for a month of shows in 2020.

Andrew Lloyd Webber and Cameron Mackintosh have announced their musical, which has played in London's West End for 34 years, will tour the UK and Ireland next year.

The show, which features haunting hits like Music of the Night, All I Ask of You, Masquerade as well as its iconic title song, will be on the bill at Sunderland Empire from Wednesday November 4 to Saturday December 5 2020.

The Phantom of the Opera tells the story of a disfigured musical genius, 'The Phantom, who haunts the Paris Opera House. Mesmerised by the talents and beauty of a young soprano – Christine, the Phantom lures her as his protégé and falls fiercely in love with her. Unaware of Christine’s love for Raoul, the Phantom’s obsession sets the scene for a dramatic turn of events where jealousy, madness and passions collide.

The production is one of the most successful musicals of all time, having played to 145 million people in 41 countries. It has won more than 70 major theatre awards, including seven Tony Awards and four Olivier Awards.

Tickets go on sale from Wednesday November 13 to ATG Theatre Card members, on Friday November 15 for groups of 10+ and on general sale from Monday November 18.
