The PGMOL verdict on the VAR decision for disallowed Sokratis goal in Arsenal's draw with Palace

Not for the first time this season, VAR hit the headlines this weekend after Arsenal's 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace yesterday (Sunday).

There were two key decisions that went against the Gunners in the game, with Crystal Palace awarded a penalty in the first half after a VAR review, after referee Martin Atkinson had originally booked Wilfried Zaha for what he perceived as a dive.

That decision was overturned, with Luka Milivojevic stepping up to convert from the penalty spot to reduce the deficit, as Palace went on to claim a point after fighting back from two goals down.

But there was another talking point around VAR, with the Gunners having a late goal ruled out.

Sokratis had thought that he had scored his second goal of the game to clinch victory for the Gunners, but his celebrations were cut short as the on-field decision was overturned, with the goal disallowed after a VAR review.

The decision left some Arsenal fans raging , while Match of the Day 2 pundit Peter Crouch said he could not believe that the goal was not allowed to stand.

But the body responsible for match officials in English professional football, PGMOL, have issued a statement on the decision, which was read out by Match of the Day 2 host Mark Chapman on the BBC programme last night.

He said: "Right, let's deal with whether there was or there wasn't [a foul]. We were told by the PGMOL that the VAR official made a subjective decision that [Calum] Chambers tripped [Luka] Milivojevic and affected his ability to clear the ball."
