The Petr Cech advice Edouard Mendy will ask for ahead of Chelsea's second leg vs Real Madrid

Edouard Mendy says he will seek out advice from Petr Cech regarding Champions League penalty shoot-outs ahead of the second leg of the Blues' semi-final against Real Madrid.

The Senegal international has been in excellent form for the Blues in European football's biggest club competition this season. Mendy has kept seven clean sheets in ten appearances and has saved 24 of the 27 shots on target he has faced.

Mendy was between the posts once again on Tuesday night as Chelsea faced off against Real Madrid for the first time in the European Cup. The game at the Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano ended 1-1 with Christian Pulisic's early goal cancelled out by an excellent strike from Karim Benzema.

The 29-year-old will almost certainly start for the Blues in the second leg at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday evening. A repeat scoreline in that game would result in a penalty shoot-out deciding which of the two sides reach the final in Istanbul.

Chelsea supporters have become used to nail-biting shoot-outs in the Champions League, no more so than in Munich in 2012 when Roberto Di Matteo's side overcame Bayern Munich to lift the big-eared trophy.

Cech was the Blues' goalkeeper that night and while Mendy admits he hasn't spoken to the legendary goalkeeper about his experience at the Allianz Arena, he will look to change that in the near future.

"I haven’t spoken with him about it, actually," he told Chelsea's club website. "I have spoken to him about a lot, but not that!

"I have memories of the penalties he saved for Chelsea, of course, because they helped the club win the Champions League. So it’s clear he will be the best person to speak to in preparation."

Mendy was brought to Stamford Bridge last summer from Rennes to replace Kepa Arrizabalga in the starting XI. The world's most expensive goalkeeper had lost form during the 2019/20 campaign and also started this season poorly too.

Kepa has been used sparingly this term under Frank Lampard and Thomas Tuchel. The German coach has, however, attempted to rebuild the 26-year-old's confidence and Kepa has kept five clean sheets in his last five appearances.

Mendy is pleased for the Spaniard and believes a return to form for Kepa only improves the "very high level" of Chelsea's goalkeeping contingent.

He said: "When you are at a big club there is competition for everyone. You have to prepare for that and keep performing. I am performing, but I have to stay concentrated.

"There is a very high level in the group. Kepa has played some matches recently and they went well. I was happy for him, and the team. It says he is ready, too. I am happy for the team above everyone.

"There is Willy, there is me, there is Kepa, and like the coach says there is competition and he can count on three goalkeepers who give a good level of performance.

"My relationship with Kepa is good, like my relationship with Willy. We work together, we play for the same team, the same shirt. We need to stay together, and we push each other in the training ground."
