The Perseid meteor shower is expected to peak in pre-dawn skies tonight and 13 August. Dozens of shooting stars, most lasting less than a second, will streak across the sky every hour. The next two nights also offer the best opportunity of spotting an ultra-bright meteor called a fireball.
One of the best things about meteor showers is that they're relatively easy to watch. Wrap up warm, find the darkest area you can and face east. Brecon Beacons in south Wales, North Downs and the Chilterns are all named as some of the best places in the UK, to catch a glimpse of the Perseid shower which won't be back again until 2015.
