The perfect time 'to clear out the extras' – why the rare August 2025 Black Moon is ideal for streamlining items ‘weighing you down’

Light blur living room, comfy sofa, cushions, oval table, armchair, cupboard, paintings.

Every so often, the universe offers a sign that it’s time to start afresh. The upcoming rare Black Moon – a rare lunar event – is just that, experts say.

A Black Moon can be seen as a symbolic push to shed what’s weighing you down in your home and create space for more intentional living.

Here, we spoke to leading astrology experts to learn more about why now is the perfect time to try out some new decluttering methods, and the best places to focus your energy.

Why the rare August 2025 Black Moon is the perfect time to streamline your home

The next Black Moon won't happen till 2028, so harness the energy of the one on 23 August 2025 to turbocharge how you organize and declutter your home.

There are several ways you can tidy according to your zodiac to help you find the perfect systems for your home, or even find new ways to clean more easily for your Zodiac sign.

What makes the August 2025 Black Moon so special, however, is its spiritual weight.

Leslie McGuirk, internationally acclaimed astrologer, explains, ‘On August 23, the skies bring us a rare Black Moon. Astronomically, it’s an “extra” new moon – most seasons only have three, but this one has a fourth. While you won’t see anything unusual (new moons hide in shadow), you might feel a subtle pull to reset.

‘Symbolically, a new moon is always about beginnings, but when an extra one appears, it carries a special message: it’s time to clear out the extras in our lives.

Rebecca Swanner, founder and editorial director at The Pagan Grimoire, adds, ‘It’s a lunar “reset button” with extra potency, ideal for inner work you want to carry forward for months or years ahead.’

Because it falls in the sign of Virgo, this Black Moon in particular offers ‘extraordinary opportunity for deep release, intention-setting, and transformation,’ Rebecca says, inviting you to release patterns, fears, and attachments that no longer serve you.

Leslie says that, in practical terms, it is the perfect time to declutter spaces that you typically avoid for whatever reason. Specifically, those that ‘hold life’s overflow.’

'This could be the garage stacked with boxes you haven’t opened in years, the basement shelves with half-used paint cans, or just the kitchen drawer with too many rubber bands and scissors,’ she suggests. ‘Even your online world may need a refresh with some digital decluttering – old emails, unused apps, or those 200 blurry photos you’ve been meaning to delete.’

‘Spiritually, this kind of clearing makes sense,’ Leslie continues. ‘Extra moons ask us to release what is more than we need, so we can invite in what truly supports us. Sometimes that means letting go of actual objects, but it can also mean trimming back on obligations, habits, or even thought patterns that feel like “too much.”’

To set yourself up for a successful decluttering session during this rare Black Moon, Leslie suggests asking yourself one key question: ‘What extras are weighing me down?’ Whether it’s a shelf, a schedule, or a state of mind, clearing it now creates space for something meaningful to take root.’

For further reflection and to break bad home habits, Rebecca also suggests asking yourself what you are ready to release right now, and ‘what seeds am I planting for the months ahead?’
