The perfect replacement for Kepa Arrizabalaga at Chelsea - and it's not Edouard Mendy

While Chelsea have been very busy in the transfer market, one of the key positions is yet to be properly addressed.

Kepa Arrizabalaga struggled in the 2019/20 campaign, conceding 47 goals in his 33 Premier League appearances, while coming under real scrutiny.

Twice during the campaign the shotstopper was dropped for the 38-year-old Willy Caballero, including for the big Champions League matches with Bayern Munich.

While the Blues have reinforced the attacking line heavily, with the incoming Kai Havertz to join Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech, the Blues haven’t brought in a new goalkeeper.

The ultimate lowdown on Edouard Mendy

It’s something they are looking at doing in the coming weeks, and there have been plenty of names being thrown into the mix.

Nick Pope, Mike Maignan and Andre Onana have all been linked, while the most likely new man is Rennes’ Edouard Mendy.

The 28-year-old is backed by Petr Cech and goalkeeping coach Christophe Lollichon to make an impact with the Blues, and push Kepa all the way for the number one place.

There have been several players who the Blues could move for, and looking at the statistics there are many candidates.

According to Whoscored, Kepa averaged 3.11 saves per 90 minutes, but conceded 1.39 goals every 90 minutes.

The Chelsea number one averaged 2.82 saves per game when conceding one or less goals, and finished the campaign with a success rate of 67.9%.

In comparison, Mendy averaged 2.54 saves per game, but conceded only 0.79 per 90 minutes.

The Senegalese international averaged 2.3 saves per game when conceding one of less, while he had a save success rate of 75.3%.

One of the best options for the Blues to go for would be Ugurcan Cakir, the 24-year-old from Trabzonspor.

Cakir had a save success rate of 70.4%, while completing 3.55 saves per game.

He also had 3.42 saves per game when conceding one or less goals, while he conceded 1.25 goals per game.

Kepa has certainly lost the faith of Lampard at times last season, but the Spaniard is keen to fight for his place with the Blues.

But if there are alternate options for the Blues to sign in the summer, then there are good players who could replace the Spaniard.
