The People's Kitchen to give advent calendar treats to Newcastle's most vulnerable

The People's Kitchen Newcastle are asking for local businesses to donate £200 to give people advent calendar treats every day in December up until Christmas Eve.

The concept is that every day of advent, the Friends who use the People's Kitchen facilities will leave with a hearty meal inside them but also a small 'sweet treat' paid for by these local businesses.

Trustee Kevin Maloney has explained why the Kitchen is reaching out to local businesses.

“We prepare, cook, and serve around 200 meals every day and we are very grateful for the donations of money and food that we get from the public, local businesses, and community organisations. As Christmas approaches, we would like to do just a little more and provide a small ‘sweet treat’ every day to each of our Friends."

"£200 covers the cost of us providing a small box of smarties or a Terry s Chocolate Orange to every one of our Friends, a little something they otherwise would just not get – it’s a lovely reminder to them that people really do care", he said.

“We are asking for a donation of £200 from a business or organisation and we would allocate a door to open on the Advent Calendar to that business. We will put their company logo and a ’Thank You’ message alongside a picture of the treat, across all our social media channels on the day that they sponsor."

"We know times are hard for businesses, but hopefully some may be able to divert money usually spent buying and posting Christmas cards, to help others in need.”

Any business that would like to sponsor a day or just donate money can email maggie.pavlou@peopleskitchen.co.uk or go to www.peopleskitchen.co.uk/donate

At the moment, The People’s Kitchen is also running its annual "Feed a Friend for a Fiver" campaign which asks the North East public to donate five pounds to provide a free hot Christmas dinner to someone less fortunate. The money will also go towards many more meals throughout the winter.
