The peculiar reason former Manchester United star Ryan Giggs did not like Emmanuel Petit

Arsenal and Manchester United clashes of the late '90s and early '00s are legendary.

FA Cup semi-final heartbreak and that Ryan Giggs celebration, Ruud Van Nistelrooy's missed penalty, Sylvain Wiltord's winner to help seal the double - all moments etched into the memories of football fans all over the country.

There was a rivalry and intensity that is very rare in the modern game, and the stars of that era had to actively build themselves up for the clashes.

Wales manager Giggs had to dig deep to use an 'intense dislike' as motivation in the clashes which led some peculiar reasons for him to dislike his opponents. Nobody suffered quite so much in that regard as ex-Gunner Emmanuel Petit, well known for his long locks, and it was hair that drove Giggs' ire.

What David Brooks has said will give Arsenal and Tottenham hope over summer transfer swoop
The 45-year-old coach told the Daily Mail : "I didn’t like Arsenal. I didn’t like Vieira ’cos he was dirty and got away with murder.

"I didn’t like Petit because he had long hair. I didn’t like Bergkamp.

"I didn’t like Pires even though when you meet him now he’s actually dead nice. I wouldn’t even look at them, didn’t know them and didn’t want to. I wouldn’t allow myself to rate any of them.

Arsenal must match Granit Xhaka's ambitions to bring Unai Emery's ambitious vision to life

"Berkgamp? Nah, I told myself he wasn’t as good as Eric Cantona. I wasn’t really that kind of person. It wasn’t really me.

"But you had to get that in your head, that intense dislike. It was pure motivation. But deep down we knew. ‘They were top drawer and that rivalry was everything to us. Deeper even than Liverpool at that time."
