The passport office hasn't refunded my fee. What can I do?

Q Last year I needed to renew my passport. I applied online and paid the £42 fee but realised I would not get it in time for my holiday, so I renewed it in person for £83. To recoup the £42 online fee, I was advised to write requesting a cheque refund. I did so in July 2005 but have not received anything. How can I get my £42 back?

A The Home Office says it cannot comment on individual cases, but I am suspicious about the length of time that has elapsed since your refund request.

It sounds as if your letter was never received, or at least never passed on to the relevant department.

The Home Office says all complaints are dealt with in Newport, so I suggest you write again to the customer service manager, Newport Passport Office, PO Box 175, Newport, Gwent, NP20 1XA.

Make sure you quote your online application reference number and send your letter recorded delivery so you can prove this one arrived.

If necessary, you can chase your request up by phone on 0870 241 1902.
