The party is over for deluded Boris but, just like Trump, he can't accept it

Just like Donald Trump, on whom he fashions his boosterism, Boris Johnson can’t accept it’s all over. He is finished, completo, over and out, a washed-up liar and lawmaker turned lawbreaker.

To quote Sarah Connor, from his favourite movie franchise: “You’re terminated.”

But still, lacking the awareness to compute or comprehend the cliff edge he walked himself and his party over, Johnson thinks there is room for some kind of comeback.

For this delusion to work, he has to contemplate some level of reality – that he would be swept away in his safe Uxbridge seat by an incoming Labour tide, if not his own massive unpopularity.

It then relies on using his resignation honours list to throw baubles and ermine at loyal MPs, elevating them to the House of Lords so they can vacate even safer seats for Johnson to carpetbag and use as a platform for a comeback when Liz Truss so patently fails as Tory leader.

It is a simple to devise plan really, when you have nothing else to do with your time apart from running the country. It is so bonkers that only the most frenzied Johnson loyalists could take it on board. There are plenty of them, some even standing for the leadership of the party.

Whoever wins, Truss or Sunak will fail because the record of their own disastrous government is catching up on them and because they enabled Johnson’s misrule in the first place.

They will, when they reach the finishing line, be haunted by the ghost of Johnson and the venom of his supporters plotting their downfall.

So, hasta la vista, baby? No, it’s more like adios.
