The parts of Swansea still stubbornly high with coronavirus cases relative to other areas

Over the last few weeks we have seen a decline in coronavirus cases across parts of Swansea. But there are still areas where cases are a lot higher than others.

Bonymaen currently has the highest infection rate in the City and County of Swansea with 186 cases per 100,000 population in the seven days up to February 10.

This is a rise from data published last Thursday, where Bonymaen had a rate of 120. That figure was based on the number of infections per 100,000 population in the seven days up to February 6.

Sketty is currently second with 157.3 per 100,000 closely followed by Llansamlet with 156.5 per 100,000.

Both are higher than the overall infection rate across Swansea which is currently 70 per 100,000, down from 70.9 on Sunday.

Infection rates in most areas of the city have continued to decrease from a peak in December, when Swansea Bay had one of the highest rates of coronavirus infections in Wales, and Clydach and Mawr recorded over 1,000 cases per 100,000 people.

Although the latest figures are significantly lower compared to the peak in December, the picture is far from uniform across the city, with some areas seeing significantly lower rates.

For example, St Thomas has less than 25 cases per 100,000, Birchgrove also has less than 25 cases and Mumbles and Newton has less than 27 cases, data published by Public Health Wales on Monday shows.

It is really important to bear in mind that this data is very volatile because it covers small areas. Where an area has a very small population, even one positive case can push up the cases per 100,000 significantly. You should therefore be cautious about drawing too many conclusions directly from the information.

Talking about the higher infection rate in Bonymaen, Councillor Paul Lloyd said: "Everyone is doing their bit, shielding, getting their vaccination done, all we can do is our bit to eliminate it.

"It's bound to concern us because we are worried about people's health with the population of the ward being a mix, of young and very old.

"We just want to get things sorted and get them vaccinated and hopefully in time get things back to normal. As for an explanation I don't know because it fluctuates across the city and across all sections of society."

The infection rate across Wales is currently 91.6 per 100,000 population - it is the lowest it has been since September.

A further 16 people in Wales have died having tested positive for coronavirus, the latest statistics published on Monday have confirmed.

The figures from Public Health Wales reveal that 363 new cases of Covid-19 were confirmed in the previous 24-hour period - down from the 394 which were reported on Sunday - bringing the total since the outbreak of the pandemic to 199,518.

The number of people to have died with coronavirus in Wales within a month of a positive test now stands at 5,137.
