The parts of Cardiff which have the highest and lowest Coronavirus rates

While the coronavirus infection rate continues to drop across Wales, Cardiff is one area where some of the most new cases are being reported.

However, although some areas of the city are recording an infection rate of almost 10 times the Welsh average, some areas are recording next to no new cases of the virus.

Hyper-local data published daily by Public Health Wales shows the number of coronavirus cases and the rate of infection.

The latest seven-day rolling average between April 10 and April 16 shows that Cardiff has recorded an infection rate of 22.6 per 100,000 people.

Wales' capital stands only behind Swansea at 27.1, Newport at 25.9 and Gwynedd at 25.7. The infection rate for the whole country is now just 15.2.

An analysis of why cases in some of Wales' cities remain stubbornly high can be found here.

Although Cardiff is still on the higher end of the infection rates across the country, it is still far lower than it was at the start of the year as the second wave of the virus overwhelmed the health service.

In the last seven days, there have been 83 new positive coronavirus cases in Cardiff.

And while this is much more cases than other parts of the country, it is still much lower compared to the 470 cases that were reported in Cardiff alone on December 16 2020.

As of data published by Publish Health Wales on April 21, 26 areas of the city recorded between 0 and two new coronavirus cases over the last seven days.

Just two areas of the city have recorded new cases in double digits over the last week. Grangetown North recorded 12 new cases while Grangetown South recorded 10 new cases.

Grangetown has for the last week recorded the highest cases and infection rates across the city. Both Public Health Wales and Cardiff & Vale Incident Management Team were asked about this cluster and said no specific incidents or outbreaks had been reported.

However, they did stress that in areas with a small population, a small uptick in cases can lead to a large increase in the case rate.

What does this data actually mean?

The data is based on the rolling seven-day average between April 10 and April 16.

It is really important to bear in mind that this data is very volatile because it covers such small areas. Where an area has a very small population even one positive case can push up the rate of cases per 100,000 significantly.

You should therefore be cautious about drawing too many conclusions directly from the information.

Following the latest figures, the Wales infection rate is now down to 15.2 cases per 100,000 people based on the seven days up to April 16.

PHW data also shows 1,712,372people have now received a first dose of the coronavirus vaccine as of 9am on Tuesday April 20.

There are 622,513 people who have received both of their vaccine jabs.
