The part of Swansea which has the highest coronavirus case rate anywhere in south Wales

West Cross has emerged as the area with the highest coronavirus case rate anywhere in south Wales - and the people who live and work in the area are completely puzzled by it.

The latest set of Public Health Wales coronavirus infection rate statistics for a rolling seven-day period from June 14 to June 20 shows that the Swansea suburb has 245.9 cases per 100,000 people - the highest rate for all of south Wales.

Across the country, it is only surpassed by Flintshire's Higher Kinnerton with 276.9 cases per 100,000, and Queensferry and Sandycroft, also in Flintshire, which has 269.6 cases per 100,000. You can read the statistics for all of Wales by clicking here.

Neighbouring ward Mayals and Bishopston has also recorded a high number of cases, with 206.4 per 100,000 people. This can be compared with other areas of the city like Landore, Mynydd-bach, Ravenhill, Townhill, Central Swansea, St Thomas, Gorseinon, Loughor, Llangyfelach and Tircoed, Birchgrove and Cwmbwrla which have 25 or fewer cases per 100,000 at the moment.

Reacting to the statistics, West Cross councillor Des Thomas said: "I don't think people are acting any differently to anywhere else. I know a lot of people are having barbecues, whether that has got anything to do with inviting friends around, I can't think of any other reason.

"When the sun comes out, everybody comes to West Cross and Mumbles, and the roads jam up - maybe that's got something to do with it, but it's puzzling. My advice would be for everyone to stick to the rules. We've adhered to the rules for so long, let's stick at it and we will come out better the other side."

People from local businesses also struggled to put their finger on why the numbers have increased in the area. Manager of Baywash, John Rockefeller, said he had not seen any reasons in the local community to attribute to the rise.

He said: "Personally, I have not noticed anything different at all, and even with this new variant going around I have not noticed anything different than before. The traffic on the road out front has started to pick up now but that is it."

And manager of West Cross post office, Emma Williams said: "Everybody is still wearing masks and distancing within the store. In West Cross in general, everything has been as it always has been and there is nothing different. Obviously you have got some people that don't believe and there are ones that get together with friends but I have not noticed anything different.

"Maybe stuff has opened up and more people are out and about than they have been before."

Public Health Wales was asked for any reason why the rates are so high in West Cross at the moment, but said it did not comment on ward case rates.
