The part of Leeds where 83 per cent of people don't have a garden

Many of us are now beginning to get used to being locked in our homes and having a garden to prevent you from being indoors is a blessing for many of us.

However, for the majority of people living in one part of Leeds, this is a luxury they cannot enjoy.

Analysis from the Office for National Statistics shows that one in seven families across Leeds have no access to a garden during lockdown.

This equates to 15 per cent of homes in the city who have no private or shared garden to use and it affects a whopping 51,977 families in the area.

Flats in Leeds are far less likely to have a private or even shared garden, with 47 per cent of flats having no access to one, compared to just 4 per cent of houses.

Where there is a garden available for flats in the city, there will typically be four flats sharing it, on average.

Typically, homes in Leeds have a garden that is 228 metres squared on average - compared to a national average of 333 metres squared across Great Britain.

The analysis also looks at garden availability at a neighbourhood level which includes areas with a population of around 7,200 people.

This shows that in one area of Leeds city centre, which encompasses the edge of Burmantofts and the inner ring road, 83 per cent of people living there do not have a garden that they can use.

Unsurprisingly, this is due to the high proportion of tower blocks comprising flats and apartments which are synonymous with city centre living.

Families living in areas that are less likely to have a private garden tend to be more likely to live close to a public park.

You can find your nearest park by entering your postcode into this handy tool made by the ONS.
