When Alan Oliveira beat Oscar Pistorius to the gold medal in the T44 200m, South Africa’s “Blade Runner” was suspicious of his rival’s storming finish– claiming, in his post-race interview, that the Brazilian’s longer blades gave him an unfair advantage. He later apologised for the timing of his comments – but the South African Paralympic Committee still issued an official complaint

Cundy was favourite for the gold medal in the C4/5 1km time trial – until he slipped on the start. Cundy said the starting gate had malfunctioned and demanded a restart; the referee disagreed and disqualified him. With no appeal allowed, Cundy erupted in an expletive-laden fury, throwing his bottle across the warm-up area. “They’re ruining my life!” he raged. “I’ll never get this opportunity ever, ever again.” A bronze medal in the C4 individual 4km pursuit a day later salved a little of the pain
