This American show tempts you with the promise of an interactive extravaganza that would have something in common with De la Guarda and The Donkey Show. However, it turns out to be more like a glorified club night, with the added twist that the audience gets paint thrown all over them. It is high-energy, messy fun, but it is hard to work out where the art lies in the concept - except as a cash cow that milks jaded clubbers.
The trouble is that, unlike more theatrically sophisticated shows such as De la Guarda, there isn't enough here to hold your attention, unless you just want to dance the night away. There is a loose scenario in which exotic feathered creatures, played by a personable young cast in colour-coded costumes, get members of the audience to join their tribe. After everyone is covered in paint (you wear an unbecoming white suit to protect your clothing), there is an opportunity for everyone to bash each other over the head with foam sticks. It looks like a cross between a civil war re-enactment and a nursery-school riot.
The interest is in either joining in or observing how quickly individuals can be persuaded to become a mob. However, while the show clearly strains towards some kind of ritualised experience, it is more like a rather tame disco version of Lord of the Flies - minus all the really nasty bits.
