The Green Bay Packers seem to have a quarterback problem, whether the team intends to trade Aaron Rodgers or not. He has spread the word that he doesn’t intend to return to Green Bay in 2021, according to ESPN and NFL Network. The Packers, meanwhile, have refused to trade Rodgers, per 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan.
But it would be smart for Green Bay to begin to build out its quarterback room in the event the team trades Rodgers or engages in a standoff where he begins a holdout. At this time, last year’s first-round pick, Jordan Love, is the only quarterback on the roster. So the Packers are looking to add another player, and they’re exploring their options, per ESPN.
Their faith in Love might determine how aggressive the Packers get. If Green Bay thinks it can get Love prepared in time, the team might add a backup-caliber veteran. If the Packers think Love needs more time for development, they will need to get bold — and likely target a quarterback that’s on another team’s roster. For what it’s worth, Schefter reported “the plan was for (Love) to be Rodgers’ top backup this season.” He was inactive all of last season.
With that in mind, let’s break down nine options.
