The 'overzealous' Newcastle United celebrations which Steve Bruce won't want repeating

Newcastle United's celebrations against Tottenham for their opening goal potentially showed a lack of naivety on the pitch - and it's something that can't be allowed to happen again.

There were plenty of cheers and hugs in the seconds after Joelinton opened the scoring against Spurs - but the 'overzealous' celebrations allowed Harry Kane to pull the scores level almost instantly, leaving those Newcastle staff on the touchline furious.

In the end, a late goal from Joe Willock rescued a point for the Magpies but head coach Steve Bruce will not want to see his side switch off again as they did on the half-hour mark.

"It was a relief when Joe Willock crashed home the equaliser," our chief sports writer told The Everything is Black & White Podcast, "but even then, given the way Newcastle capitulated after going one-nil up - which was ridiculous - you did wonder if they could hold on.

"Thankfully they did.

"It was a decent performance in places but that game management let them down and just a little bit of confidence [was missing], and they didn't quite manage to hold the line after going one-nil up.

"They [Bruce and his staff] were furious, to be honest - I thought the celebrations were a little bit over the top when they scored their first, and I was wondering if they could get turned around and calmed down but they didn't.

"That's where your leadership needs to be spot on. Steve Bruce can't do too much about that, he can shout all he likes on the line but you need your captain or an experienced player to start getting people back and turned around.

"You haven't won the game at that point - 28 minutes gone. They were overzealous but given the criticism, that was probably an outpouring of emotion but perhaps it cost them a little bit."
