Award-winning Sydney photographer Stephen Dupont’s latest exhibition focuses on change and detribalisation in Papua New Guinea. As the recipient of the Robert Gardner Fellowship in Photography from Harvard University, Dupont was able to spend a significant amount of time travelling from the country’s most isolated regions, to its most urbanised and poverty-afflicted settlements.
Dupont’s immersion allowed him to transcend any allure of tribal exoticism and give a more nuanced reflection on the the people of Papua New Guinea. The images present an empathetic perspective on the natural beauty and infrastructural decay of Australia’s nearest international neighbour.
